A 3D idea for Illustration Friday

This post is coming to you from a very wet Batu Karas! Just waiting for our breakfast pancakes now, I think we'll be camped out in the cafe most of the morning, there's not much to do here when it's raining!

Here're the little boys playing on the steamroller. Sam tried to push it with them but (unsurprisingly) it wouldn't budge!

I started a zentangle yesterday. I quite like doing them on lined paper, it helps to keep the patterns nice and uniform! Perfect for Diana Evans' 'ten minute warm up' too!

I start with a few randomly drawn curvy lines which cross over and fill in the gaps with any pattern that takes my fancy.

Then I started work on the next challenge for Illustration Friday. The inspiration word this time is 'alphabet'. Since I enjoyed trying my hand at 3D drawing the other day I thought I'd continue in the same vein. These are just preliminary drawings to see if the idea will work well.

Firstly I drew a long shape, narrow at the bottom and wide at the top so that when viewed from the end it looks like a square. This was to establish a frame to make it easier to draw the letters.

Then I penciled in the letters, again, they are very wide at the top, very narrow at the bottom and very elongated!

I continued working the letters until I was happy with the way they looked.

Then I filled in the letters with hatching and wrote out the alphabet in the background to give the 'abc' something to stand out against.

I think photographing the page with something in the background makes it look more 3D.

I discovered this evening another way to draw the 3D image which is much easier and the results are much better! I'll share that with you in my post tonight, internet permitting!
